8.4 - Chemical Policy Reform

There are six key elements to the Louisville Charter for Safer Chemicals
  1. Require Safer Substitutes and Solutions
  2. Phase Out Persistent, Bioaccumulative, or Highly Toxic Chemicals
  3. Give the Public and Workers the Full Right-to-Know and Participate
  4. Act on Early Warnings
  5. Require Comprehensive Safety Data for All Chemicals
  6. Take Immediate Action to Protect Communities and Workers

Each of these elements are important aspects to creating a solid and safe chemical policy.

I believe elements number 1 and 2 are the most important. If we can regulate or monitor chemicals from the start it would be advisable. If there are risks or unsafe hazards from current chemical products, it should be made aware, and be replaced with safer alternatives. Or we just phase out the unsafe chemicals out all together.  The point of this is to create a more Green process. Both Green chemistry and clean production are the goals.

I really think an effective policy has to consider elements numbers 3-6  in order to protect the greater good of our populations who work around or in areas with chemical products. We must be transparent in our efforts and able to recognize and take action when needed.

  1. Yes, it's very clear after reading this that there are many important aspects to chemical policy reform. It's hard to say which elements are the most important because I believe that some aspects wouldn't exist without others. Overall, the Louisville Charter seems to be a well thought out and very thorough policy.

    1. I really read into the emphasis of "Act on Early Warnings." A lot of companies are aware of the dangers their products can do harm to, but acting on it makes a difference. I also agree with you that 3-6 steps are the "action portion" on actually evoking changes. I wish we'd see more of these policy implementations in our area!
