6.4 - Industrial Farming
Vanishing Bee's was such an informative. My favorite quote was the old movie recording where the man says "Pollination is dependent on two factors... insects or the wind." It is sad that honey bees are becoming extinct. Another issue that is important is honey production. Because of the loss of honey bee's, honey has become more expensive. Additionally, companies are manufacturing fake honey to make money. Most of these producers are international companies, are making a profit and should be considered crooks.
The movie Dirt! was awesome. I would love to see a sequel that is updated to what is going on now with our world. I took away so many great messages from the movie.

"Dirt is vital to a healthy biosphere, keeping plants, animals and humans alive."
This was a quote from a biologist in the movie, and is something I will remember forever. I am definitely one who takes for granted how easy it is to just be lazy, go for convenience and buy food at my leisure, but now I am wanting to be more mindful in my daily practice and making environmentally conscious decisions. Such as not buying plastic bottles, reducing my waste, and starting to compost. I was excited to see them feature Alice Water's edible garden in Berkeley where I actually had the privilege to volunteer at for a few months. I had so much fun working with the youth, learning about composting, and then making amazing food from what they grew in the garden. I feel like more schools need to develop programs like this.
I started to compost a few months ago, but want to do more research on how to utilize it and mix it into dirt for my backyard garden. I used to have 2 bed gardens but did not keep up with it so everything died. It takes a lot of time and energy to maintain, something I do not have right now being in school. I think once 2019 comes, I will get back into it.

Using the website https://www.factoryfarmmap.org, we are able to locate farms in counties as of 2012. Alameda county does not have any farms, but a nearby county of Sonoma showed this data. I am not surprised, there is a lot of land and space to farm in Sonoma.

I'm with you - these movies really inspired me to change my ways and be more conscious about what I am using and throwing away. I had already been composting, but this made me more conscious of the things I was not composting and should be.
ReplyDeletecomposting really makes you think about where our produce comes from...circles back to where it started (if applicable)
ReplyDeletehowever I did noticet that when i started composting, the neighbor's cat's would scrape up all the litter and it started making a mess. I need to think of a better way how to compost better -any tips? maybe a mesh screen?
