2.2 - Personal Care Products

The two personal care products I chose were Degree's Motionsense Antiperspirant/Deodorant and Tom's of Main Antiplaque & Whitening toothpaste.
Degree Antiperspirant/Deodorant rated a 3 while Tom's toothpaste rated a 1.
I had switched over to Tom's brand about 6 years ago for the specific reason that I wanted to use one with less chemicals. Recently a report on flouride being a neurotoxin came out that I am interested in investigating further.
When it comes to deodorant,  it has honestly been a gamble for me. I tried a natural product without aluminum once and I ended up smelling really bad after an hour of activity. I dance every day so need something to help with the sweat and odor. I have been told that the odor is a reaction to changing of chemicals and that the body needs to rid the body of the old product then get adjust to the new product. After examining these results I am now thinking of trying the natural deodorant process again, in addition to using high grade essential oils.
Most of our products go unregulated and just like food, the contents should be made aware to consumer. I also notice that a majority of the products I currently use are not in this database so more research needs to be done.

  1. Hi Jenay - good picks of products to review! I also switched over to Toms toothpaste because I wanted something with less chemicals. I was glad to find it had a good rating! The deodorant topic is also an interesting one. It took a long time for me to find a natural/aluminium-free deodorant that worked for me! It does take a few days but I my suggestion is to keep trying! I've also heard making your own out of coconut oil and baking soda is supposed to be a good alternative and I think I might try that!

  2. Hey Jenay ! I used that deodorant too , before I switched to Dove, thinking it was "better" - both wrong! I agree that I am taken back by the results, however I am very athletic and workout everyday; I understand we need to regulate what we use on our bodies... and it comes down to a personal preference of belief of doing what you think is right for your body with less harm. For example I traded a lot of my other cosmetics for more natural products...and in the end, I have come to the conclusion of some products...I can't find alternatives for. I'm definitely on the fence like you about trying to find new products that work best for our daily routines, but are also functional and healthy. Let me know if you find something that works!
